What an MTProto proxy is
MTProto is Telegram's own protocol, how the messenger exchanges data with its servers. An MTProto proxy is an intermediate server that Telegram can route its connection through to dodge a block.
Technically it's a redirect of one protocol. You put the proxy address into Telegram settings, and the messenger reaches the network through it. Everything else (browser, games, other apps) works as before, direct, with all the network's problems intact.
Key point: a proxy only understands Telegram traffic. It can't bypass blocks of other services, and it doesn't hide your IP from sites.
What's blocked in Russia
It's 2026 and restrictions are long past point fixes:
- Telegram gets throttled and periodically drops nationwide, video and calls stall
- WhatsApp (part of Meta, designated extremist) is blocked and throttled, photos and voice messages won't load
- Twitch won't open without a workaround, streams stopped for most users
- YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Discord are on the permanent problem list
All of these are solved by one tool that covers the whole traffic at once. A proxy can't.
Why you keep hunting for a proxy every morning
The biggest pain of anyone who tried living on MTProto proxies: public proxies get banned constantly.
Same loop, every day:
- In the morning you find a working proxy in a channel or directory
- Connect, Telegram comes alive
- A couple of hours later filters spot the proxy server and blacklist it
- By evening it's dead, and you start over
People live like that for months: hunting a new address every morning, pasting it, testing. That's a daily chore, not a solution. Public proxies also have:
- low speed, 720p video already stutters
- unknown owners, you're connecting through stranger's servers
- possible logging of your chats
Why a VPN is better
VPNs don't have the "banned, find another" problem. Our service never makes you hunt servers:
- traffic spreads across many servers, blocking them all is impossible
- if one server drops, the client switches to a live one in a fraction of a second
- setup once: import the subscription, done
A VPN encrypts all the traffic at once. So it bypasses the block not just for Telegram but for WhatsApp, Twitch, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Discord. One connected tunnel solves everything at once instead of fighting each social network individually.
Protocols like VLESS + Reality or Hysteria2 are invisible to filtering systems: traffic looks like an ordinary HTTPS site visit. That's why they get banned incomparably less often than proxies.
Straight answer: proxy or VPN
If you only need texting in Telegram and you're fine hunting a working proxy daily, a proxy can work as a stopgap.
If you need video, calls, files, plus WhatsApp, Twitch and the rest, that's a VPN job. Stable, set it up once, forget about proxy hunting.
| Criterion | MTProto proxy | VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Telegram only | Every app and site |
| Bans | Public, daily | Servers rotate automatically |
| Speed | 1-5 Mbit/s | Up to 10 Gbit/s |
| WhatsApp, Twitch, YouTube | Won't fix | Fixes |
| Setup | Hunt proxy each time | Import subscription once |
Flexible mode: VPN for Telegram only
Don't want the whole internet in a tunnel? Happ and INCY support per-app rules: add Telegram, and only its traffic goes encrypted. Your browser and games stay direct and fast.
Effectively it's a "proxy for one app," but on a fast VPN protocol you don't have to re-find every morning.
FAQ
Is a proxy faster than a VPN for Telegram? Usually not. A public MTProto proxy rarely exceeds a few Mbit/s. A VPN on a close server is noticeably faster and steadier.
Does WhatsApp work with a proxy? No. An MTProto proxy exists only for Telegram. WhatsApp needs a VPN.
Can I use a proxy and a VPN together? You can, but there's no point. If the VPN works, an inner proxy adds nothing, the tunnel already provides access.
Is a proxy safe? An MTProto proxy only sees what Telegram already sent encrypted (E2E). But public proxies are strangers, owners unknown, and nobody controls their logs. A VPN with a no-log policy is more predictable.
Does a proxy help when WhatsApp or Twitch are blocked? No, only Telegram. The rest needs a VPN.
