What's happening to TikTok in Russia

TikTok works erratically in Russia. Videos take ages, the feed updates in jerks, and sometimes the app just "loses" content. The reason is known: TikTok traffic gets throttled by TSPU at the ISP level.

Symptoms are the same for everyone:

  • videos won't play or die after a couple of seconds
  • the feed loads, but "For You" stops refreshing
  • the app opens into an empty wall

Is it a block or not?

Let's separate the cases.

State Signs What to do
Throttling (DPI) Slow videos, but the site opens Any working VPN fixes it
Blocked IP/domain App won't open at all VPN is mandatory
Regional ban Content gone, "region unavailable" Need an exit server in US/EU

In Russia it's throttling, the cruelest kind. It doesn't shut TikTok down, it makes it unusable.

Why TikTok needs a VPN with masking

A plain VPN doesn't always save you. TSPU recognizes classic protocols by signature, so a VPN running a fingerprintable protocol behaves no better than no VPN at all.

TikTok needs a protocol invisible to DPI:

  • VLESS + Reality, traffic looks like a visit to a normal HTTPS site
  • XHTTP, masks traffic as an API request
  • Hysteria2, over QUIC, resists re-throttling

That's why we push these protocols instead of OpenVPN or PPTP.

How to watch TikTok

Step 1. Install a client

Happ or INCY is easiest on Android and iOS. They read the subscription automatically and pick the right protocol.

Step 2. Connect to a server

Connect to a server in the US or Europe, that's where TikTok serves content without limits. If video stays slow, switch servers, one tap.

Step 3. Use LTE bypass

We ship two server groups: "Autoselect" and "LTE bypass." LTE bypass is tuned for mobile networks, where throttling bites hardest. Turn it on your phone.

Step 4. Clear the app cache

TikTok sometimes stays glitchy after access returns because of old cached data. Wipe the cache and the feed reloads fresh.

Will a free VPN handle TikTok?

Free VPNs have three fatal flaws for video:

  1. Tiny traffic caps, one HD clip hits the ceiling
  2. Low speed, 1080p won't stream
  3. Your data is the product, those services monetize your traffic

Video needs real bandwidth. Our servers run at up to 1-10 Gbit/s and handle streaming fine.

FAQ

Is TikTok outright banned in Russia? No, the app isn't banned. Selective throttling just produces the same effect.

Do I need a new account? No. Your account and subscriptions stay. A VPN fixes access, not your account.

Does changing region in settings help? Sometimes, partially. It's not stable. A VPN solves it at the network level, which is reliable and simple.
