Why WhatsApp breaks
WhatsApp (part of Meta, designated extremist in Russia) gets blocked and throttled across the country. The messenger opens sometimes and stalls other times, and apps "forget" to sync messages.
Typical symptoms:
- messages send with delay or just hang
- photos and videos won't download
- voice messages won't open
- calls drop or go silent
- the web version (WhatsApp Web) won't connect
None of this is a broken phone or a carrier issue. It's a network-level restriction, and it's solved one way: a route around it.
Why "sometimes it works" isn't enough
At first WhatsApp seems alive: plain text occasionally gets through. Filters let part of the traffic through while cutting media first. Photos, videos and calls suffer before anything else, because they're heavier than text.
So "kind of works" is an unstable state. The messenger lives until the filter squeezes it, then stalls again at peak moments.
How to bring WhatsApp back with a VPN
Step 1. Install a client
Happ or INCY is easiest, FlClashX, Karing and Rabbithole work too. Import the subscription once, takes a couple of minutes.
Step 2. Connect a server
Turn on the VPN in "all traffic" mode. WhatsApp needs the whole encrypted channel, not a spot bypass, otherwise media keeps stalling.
Step 3. Restart the messenger
After connecting, fully close WhatsApp and open it again. It will try to sync through the tunnel, messages and media come through.
Step 4. If calls still drop
The best protocol for calls over an unstable channel is Hysteria2: it runs over QUIC and reconnects fast. Switch the protocol in the client and retry the call.
Why WhatsApp needs masking
Filters recognize ordinary VPN protocols and throttle them too. What works is traffic indistinguishable from regular browsing:
- VLESS + Reality, looks like a visit to a normal HTTPS site
- XHTTP, masks as an API request
- Hysteria2, over QUIC, resistant to throttling

How much traffic WhatsApp eats
Text weighs almost nothing, but:
- voice messages, tens of MB for a long recording
- videos and photos in groups, hundreds of MB fast
- cloud backup, gigabytes

FAQ
Is WhatsApp fully blocked? Not removed outright, but throttled and periodically cut. In practice it doesn't work stably without a workaround.
Does a proxy help WhatsApp? No. An MTProto proxy exists only for Telegram. WhatsApp needs a VPN.
Can anyone see my messages when I use a VPN? No. A VPN encrypts the channel, but the message content is already protected by WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. The VPN doesn't read your chats.
Do I need to move my number? No, nothing to move. Your account and number stay, a VPN only changes the connection route.
